Chicago’s Joe Freshgoods continues his successful partnership with New Balance, this time resurrecting a hidden gem from the brand’s archive: the New Balance 1000. Originally introduced in 1998, the 1000 is set for a major comeback in 2024, spearheaded by Freshgoods’ unique design vision.
Freshgoods offers a fresh take on the classic runner with two distinct colorways: “Pink Mink” and “Black Ice.” Both options showcase premium materials and signature Joe Freshgoods details. While a specific release date is still under wraps, Freshgoods confirmed an April 2024 launch window.
Early leaks provided a glimpse of the “Black Ice” iteration, featuring a mix of black and grey shades with eye-catching copper-toned iridescent overlays. This unique touch has drawn comparisons to the coveted Skepta x Nike Air Max 97 Ultra from 2017. The shoe also boasts a classic gum outsole and a custom “jfg” emblem enclosed in a circle on the heel and mint green insoles.
Fans of Joe Freshgoods collaborations know his designs often weave in a deeper narrative. His 2020 debut with New Balance, the 992 “No Emotions Are Emotions,” explored the power of self-expression through one’s work. The 2021 990v3 “Outside Clothes” celebrated Chicago summers and Black cultural traditions. While the inspiration behind the New Balance 1000 collaboration remains a mystery for now, sneakerheads are sure to dissect every detail for hidden messages.
This 1000 collaboration follows a fruitful year for the Joe Freshgoods and New Balance partnership in 2023. The duo released three collections: the 610 and Rainer Boot “Beneath the Surface,” the 650 “Stuntman,” and a trio of 990v4s inspired by the film “Belly.” Freshgoods joins Aimé Leon Dore as one of the first collaborators for the returning 1000, with several general release colorways also on the horizon.
An official release date for the “Pink Mink” and “Black Ice” New Balance 1000s is still under wraps, but Joe Freshgoods anticipates a launch sometime in April. Stay tuned for further updates as they become available.
