The recent collaboration between New Balance and Shohei Ohtani marks a new chapter in the evolution of athletic footwear, particularly for men who appreciate both performance and style. This partnership has resulted in the Shohei Ohtani First Signature Collection, which showcases a range of products that blend high-functionality with contemporary aesthetics. The collection officially debuted on July 15, with an exclusive preview available in Fort Worth, Texas, during the New Balance MLB All-Star Weekend pop-up event.
Shohei Ohtani, a two-time American League MVP, has captured the attention of baseball fans worldwide, not only for his impressive skills on the field but also for his distinct sense of style. His logo, a dynamic sketch of the athlete rounding first base, encapsulates his dual talents as a pitcher and hitter. This emblem serves as a fitting representation of his prowess and dedication to the sport, making the First Signature Collection not just a tribute to his achievements but also a reflection of his personal brand.
The collection features a variety of apparel and footwear designed for both on-field performance and off-field style. The aesthetic choices draw inspiration from baseball itself, employing classic neutral tones complemented by Marsh Green, reminiscent of the infield dirt, the pitcher’s mound, and the outfield. The pieces include woven jackets, pants, and cotton tees that effortlessly merge traditional baseball elements with a modern minimalist approach. Notably, the overlocking stitch lines on the French Terry items mimic the stitching found on a baseball, serving as a clever nod to the sport’s rich heritage.
At the forefront of this collection is the Ohtani 1, the first signature cleat, which symbolizes the intersection of versatility and high performance. Designed with insights from Ohtani himself, this cleat caters specifically to the unique needs of a two-way player. Comfort, durability, and ground feel were the primary considerations during the design process. The cleat features FuelCell foam integrated into the midsole, providing responsive cushioning, while a raised triangle pattern along the toe box echoes the architectural details of certain NPB ballparks in Japan.
Matt Nuzzo, Senior Product Manager for Field of Play at New Balance, shared insights into the design philosophy behind the Ohtani 1. “In designing Shohei’s spike, we knew every detail mattered,” he stated. “Comfort, durability, and ground feel were the most important to him, so there are no contours or recesses on the plate to maintain a flat surface underfoot to help prevent mud from caking and to allow the studs to interact with the ground.” This meticulous attention to detail ensures that the footwear not only enhances performance but also meets the aesthetic standards expected by modern athletes.
The Ohtani 1 is available in two classic colorways—white with gold and black with gold—both of which are designed to seamlessly integrate into an athlete’s wardrobe. The collection also includes metal cleat and turf styles, catering to different playing conditions and preferences. This thoughtful approach to design reflects Ohtani’s commitment to the sport and his desire to provide fellow athletes with the best possible equipment.
Additional on-field performance drops for the collection are expected this Winter.
