ISSEY MIYAKE, the renowned Japanese fashion brand, has teamed up with New Balance to create a revolutionary shoe collection that seamlessly blends avant-garde design with unparalleled comfort. The ISSEY MIYAKE x New Balance MT10O collaboration marks a significant milestone in the footwear industry and showcases the perfect harmony between two iconic brands.
Satoshi Kondo, ISSEY MIYAKE’s visionary in-house designer, was inspired by the concept of fusing the sensuality of the human body with the liberating feeling of walking barefoot. By adapting ISSEY MIYAKE’s signature design elements and color palette to the iconic New Balance MT10, Kondo has created a shoe that embodies the essence of both brands.
The MT10O exemplifies the “natural and honest form” philosophy presented in ISSEY MIYAKE’s Spring-Summer 2024 collection. With its airy lightness and barefoot-like comfort, this shoe offers a unique and refreshing experience for the wearer. The campaign for the collaboration, captured by talented French photographer and artist Antoine Picard, emphasizes the centrality of the physical, further reinforcing the shoe’s connection to the human form.
Originally introduced in 2011, the New Balance MT10 was designed to provide a minimalist running experience that mimics the feeling of running barefoot, while providing the protection and traction needed for off-road terrain. Part of New Balance’s Minimus Series, the MT10 features minimal cushioning and a low-to-the-ground profile that allows runners to feel more connected to the earth beneath their feet.

Satoshi Kondo’s meticulous attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the MT10O’s design. The insole proudly displays a co-branded logo, while the shoes come with a special pouch and original shoebox, adding to the exclusivity of the collaboration.
The upper of the MT10O combines breathable mesh with premium leather for lightweight comfort and durability. The delicate rope-like laces add a touch of elegance to the minimalist design, while the instep strap and non-marking rubber sole provide optimal functionality and support.
The midsole of the MT10O incorporates minimalist cushioning while being reinforced to create the perfect platform for off-road running. The outsole is made from Vibram’s premium rubber, specifically designed to provide exceptional grip and durability on a variety of terrains, from city streets to natural trails. Protruding lugs on the outsole enhance traction, allowing runners to tackle any challenge with confidence.
A key feature of the MT10O is its snug fit, which keeps the foot securely in place even on uneven surfaces. The shoe’s slanted shape and wide forefoot, inspired by the NL1 model, help strengthen foot muscles by promoting ground contact. With a minimal 4mm slope in the toe area, the MT10O promotes a more natural stride and midfoot strike when running, reducing the risk of injury and promoting a healthier gait.
The ISSEY MIYAKE x New Balance MT10O collaboration was first released to select retailers in Japan on May 15th, followed by a global launch on June 14th. The collection features three colorways: white, black and blue-green, each seamlessly integrated with ISSEY MIYAKE’s SS24 color palette.
