The adidas Stan Smith, a cultural icon that transcended its tennis court origins, gets a fresh lease on life with the introduction of the adidas VeloStan Smith. This new iteration caters specifically to urban cyclists and commuters, seamlessly blending the classic Stan Smith silhouette with cycling-oriented features.
For over five decades, the Stan Smith has redefined the concept of a sports shoe. The collaboration between adidas and tennis legend Stan Smith in 1978 birthed a design that transcended the realm of athletics, becoming a mainstay in fashion and popular culture. Now, the VeloStan Smith opens this legacy up to city commuters who navigate their urban landscapes on two wheels.
The key modification for cycling comes in the form of a two-bolt cleat mount compatible with SPD clipless pedals. This discreet system is cleverly integrated into the midsole, allowing cyclists to seamlessly switch between on-bike pedaling and off-bike walking without needing to change shoes.
Further enhancing the cycling experience, a rigid nylon plate embedded within the synthetic sole provides crucial stiffness for efficient pedaling. This plate, however, only covers the front two-thirds of the sole, ensuring flexibility and comfort when walking.
The upper retains the timeless appeal of the original, constructed from a durable full-grain leather suitable for all-weather conditions. Signature elements like the iconic green foam heel tab and the perforated three stripes are faithfully preserved, ensuring a look that instantly evokes the Stan Smith heritage. As a special touch, the VeloStan Smith boasts a unique golden-embossed portrait of Stan Smith and his racing bike on the tongue, a subtle detail exclusive to this edition.
“It’s been very special to collaborate with Stan on this project alongside our Originals team,” shared Kerryn Foster, Head of Specialist Sports at adidas. “The Stan Smith has transcended its original purpose, becoming a cultural icon. We understand that urban cyclists require versatility, and this latest iteration prioritizes that. It’s a unique shoe designed to help riders explore their city in style.“
Stan Smith himself expressed his enthusiasm for the new design: “The Stan Smith journey began in 1978, and it’s been a joy to see adidas continuously evolve and reimagine it. This latest cycling-specific version is no different. As someone who enjoys the adventure of cycling, I’m excited about how these innovative features build upon the shoe’s sporting legacy. By introducing the Stan Smith to the cycling world, I hope it inspires more people to discover new communities and experience the freedom of exploring by bike.“
The adidas VeloStan Smith joins the Velosamba as part of the brand’s renewed focus on urban cycling footwear. Available in the classic white and green colorway for €140.
