From the vibrant streets of New York to the diverse neighborhoods of Los Angeles, the groundbreaking collaboration between Kids of Immigrants and Nike brings new energy to sneaker culture with their distinctive take on the Air Max Sunder. Daniel Buezo and Weleh Dennis, founders of Kids of Immigrants, have transformed the overlooked silhouette into a powerful symbol of immigrant entrepreneurship and community strength.
The partnership features two striking colorways that pay homage to the tireless work ethic of immigrant families. The first features a bold Persian violet gradient that transitions seamlessly across the redesigned upper, while the “Sundial” variant offers an alternative interpretation of the sunrise to sunset concept.
Breaking away from conventional design approaches, the duo stripped the original Air Max Sunder down to its essential elements. They removed the traditional mudguard and armor plating, keeping only the midsole and zipper enclosure. The redesigned upper now features innovative TPU overlays in a distinctive grid pattern, creating a fusion of futuristic and nostalgic elements.
The details of the sneaker carry a deep meaning to the immigrant experience. Beneath the zipper is a subtle nod to their brand – the numbers 3062 replace Nike’s traditional 6453, representing Kids of Immigrants’ text-message service. The shoe’s insole pays homage to the calling cards that once connected immigrant families across borders.
Born in 2016 from humble beginnings, Kids of Immigrants started in Buezo’s living room in the Pico-Union neighborhood of Los Angeles. Their journey, from selling “Support Your Friends” t-shirts worn by celebrities to collaborating with Nike, demonstrates the power of authentic community building.
The collection launches November 21 via Nike SNKRS, followed by an exclusive online giveaway through Kids of Immigrants.
